Three Title bouts announced for ONE: Century in Tokyo

After their monumental debut in Japan, ONE Championship is once again gearing up for another stacked card in Tokyo.

On Sunday, June 30, ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced the first set of bout scheduled for ONE: Century on October 13 in Tokyo, Japan. ONE: Century, the promotion’s 100th show, is billed to be ONE’s largest event to date.

Familiar Foes

The Tokyo card will pit together familiar rivals eyeing to settle scores.

First up is an atomweight championship bout between ONE Women’s Atomweight Champion Angela Lee and ONE Women’s strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan. Xiong will drop down a division to try and snatch Lee’s title and cement herself as the first woman to hold two world titles in MMA in ONE.

The two first met in the cage at ONE: New Era when Lee challenged Xiong for her strawweight strap. The pair put up a thrilling back-and-forth war, with Lee even coming close to finishing the fight with an armbar. Xiong, however, endured the pressure and knocked the Singaporean out in the final round –handing “The Unstoppable” her first ever loss.

Another rematch set for the monumental event is a tetralogy between ONE Bantamweight Champion Bibiano Fernandes and Team Lakay stalwart Kevin Belingon. They last faced each other in ONE: New Era where Fernandes ultimately got the W because of a disqualification ruling against Belingon.

The DQ resulted from elbow strikes landing at the back of the Brazilian’s head during a takedown attempt. Belingon, however, maintained that the strikes were unintended and should not have warranted a loss.

Needless to say, few were left satisfied with the conclusion of the trilogy. This upcoming contest will give the competitors a chance to settle once and for all who should be hailed as the greatest bantamweight in ONE.

Clash of Titans

Another title bout scheduled for ONE: Century is a champion versus champion super-showdown between Heavyweight kingpin Brandon Vera and Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Aung La N Sang. The Filipino veteran will step down to Light Heavyweight to try and capture his second belt in ONE.

Vera has been actively seeking this matchup for the past months, which has only been confirmed after the Filipino respectfully called out his opponent in Japan last May.

Fans expect an all-out war from the upcoming fight as both titans are currently dominating their respective divisions. Vera has finished all his past opponents in ONE via first-round KO while Aung La is currently riding a six-fight win streak and has also finished his past four fights by KO.

This will be the first time the Burmese will defend his Light Heavyweight strap since winning it February last year. It will also be the first time Vera drops down to Light Heavyweight in seven years.

Grand Prix Finals

ONE: Century is also set to host the conclusions of all the promotion’s ongoing tournaments:  the ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix, the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, and the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix

Saygid Arslanaliev already has already claimed his spot at the finals of the lightweight tournaments after knocking out fellow KO artist Amir Khan back in May. He will face the winner o Timofey Nastyukhin and Honorio Banario‘s match at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES in Manila on August 2.

The Manila card will also determine the last flyweights standing as former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson faces Japanese contender Tatsumitsu Wada, and Team Lakay prodigy Danny  Kingad squares off against former ONE flyweight champion Kairat Akhmetov in a pair of semifinal bouts.

The kickboxing tournament will also be settled in three more contests over the coming months until only two competitors remain – beginning next Friday, July 12, as Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy and Giorgio  Petrosyan square against each other at ONE: Masters of Destiny.
